Dr. Glowcat's Debug Log

Thanks For Disagreeing

Last week I published the third pawst of my newly opened blog. It was mostly a rant and a hot reaction to a piece of news I had just read, and I was expecting my usual 10 reads before the pawst sank into the forgotten depths of the internet. It's a new blog, after all, plus I get the impression that people don't like reading long, unhinged rants1.
I finished my rant, closed my laptop and went on holiday without giving it one more thought, so you can imagine my surprise when I came back and found out that my pawst had had hundreds of reads and was shared on a bunch of other websites.

Me, a very very shocked cat On any other platform, I would have been drowned in a radioactive tide of comments calling me a fat, stupid bitch and threatening death, rape and the annihilation of my family just for having externalized my thoughts. I would have been the target for people's random anger and frustration, regardless of whether they agreed with what I had said or even cared about the topic. Here on Bear, instead, people took the time to read the full piece and then craft their thoughtful responses to it; many even went back to the source and read the news report themselves, to get their own opinion not filtered by my interpretations. How awesome is that?
Long story short, I am grateful for all the people who took the time to share their thoughts, but I am especially grateful towards the ones who disagreed with mine. You showed me that disagreements are not a threat, and that we can still have a civil conversation altogether.
Now, imagine if this was the standard everywhere.
